King Arthur (Book II, Chapter 6): "Why can’t you harness Might so that it works for Right?… The Might is there, in the bad half of people, and you can’t neglect it."

Arthur is a king worth remembering not for his heroism or his military exploits, but because he recognizes that all people have a good side and a bad side. He wants to use people’s bad sides for the common good. For example, knights who long to fight will still be able to fight, but they will fight against those who do evil deeds rather than fight for its own sake.

Watch this video and think about Arthur as a leader.

Then using the quote above, write a TIQATIQA paragraph that answers this question:

How does Arthur want to be remembered as a leader?

Make sure you break the quote into two parts so that your paragraph has two quotes. That way your paragraph will follow:

Topic Sentence: Answer the question.
Introduce the Quote: Do not just put the quote. Who is saying this quote?
Quote: weave it into your sentence.
Analyze the Quote in two sentences. How does that quote explain the topic sentence?
Transition into next quote (Also, In addition, Another, Furthermore, Therefore, However)
Introduce next quote (this can be part of your transition sentence)
Quote: second quote (should be woven into your sentence)
Analyze the Quote in two sentences. How does this quote further explain the topic sentence?

  1. Arthur does not want to be remembered for his strength and power but his knowledge and ideas about power. He wants to know "why [he can't] harness might so that it works for right" (248). The power and might is there, but he wants to direct it to work the right way for good. Furthermore, Arthur says, "The might is there, in the bad half of people, and you can't neglect it" (248). He knows you can't get rid of power being used in a bad way;however, maybe you can redirect it so that it is used for good.

  2. Arthur wants to be remembered as a brave warrior and a strong king who does good things. He wants to know " why can't you harness might so that it works for right?" (248). He is trying to say why can't he as the king use physical power so that it works for goodness. Also, he believes that "the might is there, in the bad half of people, and you cant neglect it" (248). He is saying that might always leads to killing and hurting people instead of in a good way.

  3. Arthur uses other people's strength in a clever way. Arthur wonders "why [he can't] harness might so that it works for right" (248). He wishes that people could use their love for fighting in a good way when they fight evil people, instead of just battling anyone to have a good time. He ends up making that come true. Therefore, he knows "the might is there, in the bad half of people, and you can't neglect it" (248). He uses the bad power in people to do good. He makes their weaknesses in to strengths by fighting against evil people.

  4. Arthur uses his leadership to recognize the good in people and not the evil. Arthur questions, "Why can't you harness might so that it works for right?" (248). He is saying that physical strength is there, but why can't it be used for good? Furthermore, "the might is there, in the bad half of people, and you cant neglect it" (248). He explains that might is only used for bad and not good. Therefore, you can't neglect it. Arthur wants to change the might from the bad side of people to the good side.

  5. Arthur wants to be remembered as a fair and just ruler. He thinks that strength should be used for right. Arthur asks Merlyn, "Why cant you harness Might so that it works for right?" (248) Later on Arthur discovers that it is hard to harness might, and you can't rule a kingdom with force. Arthur thinks that there is one half of a person that is good and one half that is bad. Arthur knows that "the might is there, in the bad half, and you can't neglect it"(248) Arthur tries not to let the bad side of people hurt him, and Arthur tries to help them do good again.

  6. Arthur was a great leader with great battle skills, but he was remembered for his ability to see the good and the bad in people. However, he wondered "why [you can't] harness Might so that it works for right" (248). There are people who use their strength for evil, but they do not have to use it that way. In addition to that he says that "the Might is there, in the bad half of people, and you can’t neglect it" (248). When those who are bad have might, it can't be stopped. However, he thinks their power can be changed and be used for good.
